How Long Do AC Units, Heat Pumps and Furnaces Last?

A central air conditioner typically lasts 15–20 years, a heat pump 12–17 years because it runs in both seasons, a gas furnace 15–25 years, a ductless mini-split 15–20 years, and ductwork 20–30 years before leaks and deterioration justify replacement — with North Carolina’s long humid cooling season and, on the coast, salt air pushing air conditioners and heat pumps toward the shorter end of those ranges. Past about 12 years, efficiency has drifted down and the odds of a major failure each season rise, which is where the repair-or-replace math starts to matter.

Why North Carolina runs shorter

Cooling season here stretches from April or May into October, so a Raleigh or Charlotte system accumulates more compressor hours per year than one in a northern state; heat pumps then run through winter as well. High humidity keeps coils wet, which accelerates corrosion, and vented crawlspaces expose ductwork and air handlers to moisture year-round. On the coast, salt air corrodes outdoor coils and cabinets fast enough that coastal-grade equipment and regular rinsing are worth it. None of this is dramatic; it means planning on the lower half of the ranges above.

Signs a system is near the end

Repairs in consecutive seasons; a refrigerant leak that keeps coming back; rising bills with no change in habits; humidity the system used to handle and no longer does; hot and cold rooms; loud starts, grinding or a compressor that hums but doesn’t start; and, on furnaces, any sign of heat-exchanger trouble, which is a safety issue rather than a lifespan question. Any of these on a system past 12 years is a prompt to get a replacement quote alongside the repair, using the repair-or-replace guide.

How to extend it

Annual service is the single biggest lever: a spring cooling check and a fall heating check catch capacitors, contactors, dirty coils and drain lines before they cause failures (tune-up checklist). Change filters on schedule; restricted airflow is behind a large share of frozen coils and burned-out blower motors. Keep the outdoor unit clear and, on the coast, rinsed. Fix duct leaks. And when you replace, get the sizing right: an oversized system short-cycles itself to an early death, which is why the installation matters more than the brand.

Knowing you’re in the last third of a system’s life lets you replace on your schedule in shoulder season rather than in a July emergency, and lets you line up rebates. Frequently asked questions

Does brand determine lifespan?

Less than installation quality and maintenance do. A correctly sized, correctly charged mid-tier system with annual service will generally outlast a premium system that was oversized and never serviced.

My heat pump is 14 years old and works fine. Should I replace it anyway?

No. Budget for it, keep it serviced, and replace when a major repair or a comfort problem arrives. Proactive replacement makes sense mainly when rebates are rich and the system is already inefficient.

How do I find my system's age?

The manufacture date is encoded in the serial number on the outdoor unit's data plate; the manufacturer's site or your contractor can decode it. The install date is often on the permit record.
