Why North Carolina runs shorter
Cooling season here stretches from April or May into October, so a Raleigh or Charlotte system accumulates more compressor hours per year than one in a northern state; heat pumps then run through winter as well. High humidity keeps coils wet, which accelerates corrosion, and vented crawlspaces expose ductwork and air handlers to moisture year-round. Signs a system is near the end
Repairs in consecutive seasons; a refrigerant leak that keeps coming back; rising bills with no change in habits; humidity the system used to handle and no longer does; hot and cold rooms; loud starts, grinding or a compressor that hums but doesn’t start; and, on furnaces, any sign of heat-exchanger trouble, which is a safety issue rather than a lifespan question. How to extend it
Annual service is the single biggest lever: a spring cooling check and a fall heating check catch capacitors, contactors, dirty coils and drain lines before they cause failures (tune-up checklist). Change filters on schedule; restricted airflow is behind a large share of frozen coils and burned-out blower motors. Keep the outdoor unit clear and, on the coast, rinsed. Fix duct leaks. And when you replace, get the sizing right: an oversized system short-cycles itself to an early death, which is why the installation matters more than the brand.
