What a Proper AC or Heat Pump Installation Includes

A proper residential HVAC installation starts with a load calculation for the house, selects equipment that matches that load, checks that the ductwork can deliver the airflow, installs the system to the manufacturer’s specifications, and finishes by measuring refrigerant charge and airflow and putting the results in writing along with the permit and warranty registration. Skipping any of those steps is how a good system ends up performing like a bad one.

1. Load calculation (Manual J)

Before anything is quoted, the contractor should calculate how much heating and cooling your house actually needs, based on square footage, insulation, windows and orientation, air leakage, and the local climate design temperatures. In North Carolina’s humid climate the calculation also determines the latent (moisture) load, which is what decides whether a system will control humidity. 2. Equipment selection (Manual S)

Once the load is known, the contractor selects equipment whose rated capacity at your design conditions matches it, and matches the indoor and outdoor units to each other. This is where the choice between single-stage, two-stage and variable-speed equipment gets made, and where a contractor should be able to explain why one tier makes sense for your house rather than defaulting to the top of the catalogue.

3. Duct evaluation (Manual D or at least a real look)

New equipment on undersized, leaky or badly routed ductwork will underperform on day one. A proper install includes checking that the ducts can move the required airflow, sealing leaks, and correcting obvious problems. Crawlspace and attic ducts, common here, are the usual suspects. Some jurisdictions require a duct leakage test for new systems.

4. Installation to specification

Correct line-set sizing and, on refrigerant changeovers, replacement or thorough flushing of the lines; proper evacuation of the system before charging; a level pad and secure mounting; a properly trapped and sloped condensate drain with overflow protection; correct electrical disconnect and breaker sizing; and, for furnaces, correct gas connections and venting. The permit inspection checks a good part of this.

5. Commissioning

After the system is running, the technician should measure and record refrigerant charge (superheat/subcooling), static pressure and airflow across the coil, temperature split, and thermostat operation, and adjust to the manufacturer’s specifications. This is the step most often skipped, and it is the one that determines whether the system delivers the efficiency you paid for. Ask for the commissioning numbers.

6. Paperwork

Permit number and inspection sign-off, model and serial numbers, warranty registration confirmation (many manufacturers shorten the parts warranty if the system isn’t registered), the labor warranty in writing, and a walkthrough of thermostat settings and filter changes.

Ask directly which of these steps are standard on their installs and how long a replacement takes. Ask to see a load calculation from a recent job.
