What drives the price
Size comes first, and it should come from a load calculation, not from the old unit; oversizing costs more up front and performs worse. Efficiency tier is the next biggest lever: single-stage equipment is cheapest, variable-speed compressors add several thousand dollars and buy quieter operation, better humidity control and lower bills; whether that pays back depends on your usage and rates (SEER2 explained). Ductwork condition often decides whether a quote is $7,000 or $10,000. Refrigerant matters in 2026: new systems ship with R-454B or R-32 rather than R-410A, and a proper install replaces or thoroughly flushes the refrigerant lines, which some low quotes leave out. Finally, labor and overhead vary by market and by company; a contractor with a ten-year labor warranty and its own commissioning process costs more per hour than one without.

Model numbers for the outdoor unit, indoor coil and thermostat; SEER2 rating and tonnage with the load calculation behind it; new line set or flush; pad, disconnect, drain and overflow protection; permit; disposal; labor warranty in writing; and the parts warranty registration. Rebates and credits
The federal 25C tax credit for high-efficiency AC expired for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, so 2026 buyers rely on utility and state programs.
