North Carolina spans three IECC climate zones — 3A (hot-humid) across the coastal plain, sandhills and the southern Piedmont including Charlotte and Fayetteville, 4A (mixed-humid) across the northern Piedmont, the Triad and the Triangle, and 4A/5A in the mountains — and the “A” is the part that matters most for HVAC: it means humid, so in every zone the summer job is removing moisture as much as heat, oversizing is the common mistake, and heat pumps are the natural fit, with the mountains the main place where cold-weather heating strategy (dual-fuel or cold-climate heat pumps) needs more thought.

What “humid” changes
Sizing must account for latent (moisture) load, and oversizing is worse here than anywhere: fast-cycling systems don’t dehumidify (sizing). Two-stage or variable-speed equipment earns its premium in comfort. Vented crawlspaces and attic ducts add moisture and load; sealing and encapsulation are high-value. What “mild winter” changes
Heat pumps handle heating efficiently most of the season; the few cold snaps are when auxiliary strip heat runs, and how it’s controlled decides the winter bill. Gas furnaces are optional in most of the state, and dual-fuel is the sensible way to keep one. In the mountains the balance shifts toward gas backup or cold-climate equipment. Design temperatures
Load calculations use local design conditions (roughly the hottest and coldest a place gets on all but a few days a year): for the Piedmont, around the mid-90s in summer and high teens to low 20s in winter; the coast is slightly milder in winter, the mountains much colder.
