For most homes in North Carolina, a heat pump is the better-value system: the state’s climate zones 3A and 4A have long humid cooling seasons and mild winters with only a handful of hard-freeze nights, which is exactly the profile heat pumps are built for, and in 2026 the state’s Energy Saver NC rebates apply to heat pumps but not to gas furnaces or AC-only systems. A gas furnace still makes sense where gas is already installed and cheap, in the colder western counties, and for people who strongly prefer hot-blast heat, and in those cases the usual answer isn’t furnace or heat pump but dual-fuel: a heat pump paired with the furnace as backup.
The climate argument
Heat pumps move heat rather than make it, so their efficiency depends on outdoor temperature. In the Piedmont and coastal plain, winter design temperatures sit around the high teens to mid-20s and most winter days are in the 40s and 50s, where a heat pump delivers two to three units of heat per unit of electricity. Summers are the bigger load, and a heat pump is your air conditioner, so you’re buying one outdoor unit that handles both seasons. Operating cost
At typical North Carolina electric and gas rates, a modern heat pump costs less to run than an electric furnace by a wide margin and is generally comparable to or cheaper than a gas furnace across a normal winter, because so much of the season is mild. The exception is the coldest nights, when heat pump output drops and auxiliary electric strips run; that’s when a gas furnace is cheaper per hour, and it’s why dual-fuel systems switch to gas below a set balance point. Installed cost
Replacing a furnace-and-AC pair with a heat pump usually costs about the same as, or a little less than, replacing both pieces of the old pair, because one outdoor unit does both jobs; the indoor air handler with electric strips replaces the furnace. Adding a heat pump to a working furnace (dual-fuel) costs roughly what an AC replacement does plus a compatible control. Rebates tip it further
Energy Saver NC pays up to $8,000 toward a qualifying heat pump for income-eligible households at point of sale, and utility rebates stack on top; there is no equivalent for a new gas furnace, and the federal credit ended after 2025. When a furnace still wins
Gas already at the house with a young furnace: keep it and add a heat pump instead of an AC (dual-fuel). Mountains or exposed sites with many sub-20°F nights: dual-fuel or cold-climate heat pump. Undersized electrical service that can’t support strip heat without a panel upgrade (though Energy Saver NC also rebates panels). Strong preference for hot supply air. Homes with no cooling need at all, which in North Carolina is rare.
Comfort and humidity
In this climate the summer question matters as much as the winter one. A variable-speed heat pump runs long, low cycles that pull humidity out of the air, which is what makes a Raleigh house feel comfortable at 75°F instead of clammy at 72°F.
