A dual-fuel (or hybrid) system pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace and uses whichever is cheaper at the moment: the heat pump handles cooling and most of the heating season, and when the outdoor temperature drops below a set balance point — typically somewhere in the 30s in North Carolina, tuned to the equipment and local gas and electric rates — the system switches to the furnace instead of running electric resistance strips. It’s the right answer for many homes that already have gas, for the colder western counties, and for anyone who wants heat pump economics with furnace-strength heat on the coldest nights.
How it works
The outdoor unit is a heat pump; the indoor unit is a gas furnace whose blower moves air across the heat pump’s coil. A dual-fuel thermostat or control board decides which heat source runs based on outdoor temperature (and sometimes on demand). Above the balance point, the heat pump heats efficiently; below it, the furnace takes over entirely (the two don’t run together, unlike a heat pump with electric strips). Cooling is the heat pump alone, exactly like a standard AC.
The balance point
Two balance points matter. The thermal balance point is the outdoor temperature at which the heat pump’s output just matches the house’s heat loss; below that it can’t keep up alone. The economic balance point is where gas becomes cheaper per unit of heat than the heat pump, given your rates and the equipment’s efficiency curve. Who benefits in North Carolina
Homes with gas already at the meter and a furnace worth keeping (add a heat pump instead of an AC at the next cooling replacement); homes in the mountains and foothills where sub-20°F nights are routine; larger or leakier homes with heating loads that would need a lot of strip heat; and households that dislike the cooler supply air of heat-pump-only heating on the coldest days.
