North Carolina houses feel humid with the AC running because air conditioners only remove moisture while they run, and the most common problem here is a system that’s oversized or short-cycling — it drops the temperature fast, shuts off, and never runs long enough to wring the air out — compounded by moisture entering from vented crawlspaces, leaky attic ducts pulling in humid air, and “fan on” settings that re-evaporate water off the coil. Fixes range from free (fan to Auto, smaller setback) to equipment-level (variable-speed system, sealed crawlspace, whole-home dehumidifier); the right one depends on where the moisture is coming from.
First, measure
Get a hygrometer ($10–$20) and check a couple of rooms over a few days. Target 45–55% RH in summer. If you’re at 60%+ with the AC holding temperature, keep reading. If the AC also isn’t holding temperature, start with AC not cooling.
Why the AC isn’t drying the air
Oversizing and short cycles. The single most common cause. A system sized by rule of thumb or matched to an old oversized unit satisfies the thermostat in 8–10 minutes and shuts down; the coil never gets cold and wet long enough to condense much water. Signs: short cycles, cool but clammy rooms, temperature swings. Long-term fix is correct sizing at the next replacement (sizing); interim fixes below.
Fan set to On. Continuous fan blows across a wet coil between cycles and puts the moisture back in the house. Set it to Auto.
Big setbacks and long absences. Coming home to a house at 80°F and 65% and setting 72°F pulls temperature down before humidity; the house stays damp for hours. Smaller swings help.
Airflow too high for the coil. Some installers set high blower speeds for cooling capacity; the coil runs warmer and dries less. A technician can often lower the cooling airflow within manufacturer limits to improve dehumidification.
Where the moisture is coming from
Vented crawlspaces. Ubiquitous in NC and a major moisture source: humid outdoor air enters, condenses on cool ducts and floor joists, and migrates up. Encapsulating and conditioning the crawlspace (sealed liner, closed vents, dehumidifier or supply air) is one of the highest-impact humidity fixes in this climate; it also protects ductwork and floors.
Duct leaks. Return leaks in attics and crawlspaces suck in humid, dirty air; supply leaks lose the dry air you paid for. Duct sealing.
Infiltration. Leaky windows, doors and penetrations, especially in older homes; air sealing helps humidity as much as it helps bills.
Indoor sources. Unvented dryers, bath fans that don’t run, cooking, aquariums. Run bath fans 20 minutes after showers; check that they and the dryer actually vent outside.
Fixes ranked
- Fan to Auto; smaller setbacks; run bath and kitchen fans. Free.
- Filter and coil clean; have cooling airflow checked and adjusted. Small.
- Seal ducts, especially returns in crawlspace/attic. $500–$2,500, high payoff.
- Thermostat with dehumidify/“cool to dry” mode, on equipment that supports it. Modest.
- Whole-home dehumidifier ducted into the return, $1,800–$3,500 installed; the reliable answer for a house that’s right-sized but still humid, and for shoulder seasons when the AC barely runs.
- Crawlspace encapsulation with dehumidification, $5,000–$15,000; fixes the source for many NC homes.
- At replacement: a correctly sized variable-speed system, which runs long low-output cycles and dries the air as a matter of course (variable-speed systems).
Health and house
Sustained humidity above 60% grows mold in closets and on cold surfaces, breeds dust mites, warps wood floors and buckles doors; it’s the reason indoor air quality in this state starts with moisture, not with air purifiers. If you’re seeing condensation on supply registers or musty smells, act sooner rather than later. Every contractor on the North Carolina registry shows the license status we found; ask specifically about their approach to dehumidification, since not all treat it as part of the job.
