Since 2025, new residential air conditioners and heat pumps are built for low-global-warming-potential refrigerants — mainly R-454B and R-32, both classified A2L (mildly flammable) — instead of R-410A, under the federal phasedown of hydrofluorocarbons; your existing R-410A system is still legal to own, service and recharge, but R-410A supply is being cut in steps and its service price has climbed sharply, so refrigerant-side repairs on older systems cost more each year and weigh more heavily toward replacement when a major one comes up. Nothing about the transition requires you to replace a working system.
What changed and when
Under the AIM Act, the EPA is phasing down HFC production and consumption in steps toward an 85% reduction by 2036, and its technology-transition rules ended the manufacture of new residential and light-commercial systems using R-410A at the start of 2025. Installers could initially only fit already-built R-410A equipment through the end of 2025, but in May 2026 the EPA extended that installation window, so pre-2025 R-410A inventory can still be installed while stock lasts. Manufacturers moved to R-454B (most brands) and R-32 (some), which have a fraction of R-410A’s global-warming potential. The next major supply cut is scheduled for 2029.
What it means if you own an R-410A system
Three things. First, nothing today: keep running it and keep it maintained. Second, refrigerant-side repairs cost more than they did. R-410A at homeowner service pricing has moved into the range of roughly $40–$90 per pound and higher in some markets, so a leak repair and recharge on a 3-ton system that holds 6–9 pounds is now several hundred dollars in refrigerant alone before labor; a compressor or evaporator coil replacement that opens the circuit costs correspondingly more. Third, that cost trend is a legitimate thumb on the replacement side of the scale when a major repair arrives on a system past 10–12 years; it is not a reason to scrap a working one. Refrigerant recharge cost and repair or replace cover the decision.
What it means if you’re buying in 2026
You’ll be buying an R-454B or R-32 system. Because A2L refrigerants are mildly flammable, the equipment includes refrigerant leak-detection sensors and specific requirements for line-set sizing, evacuation, charging and, in some cases, ventilation or minimum room sizes; installers need A2L training and appropriate tools, and technicians handling refrigerant must hold EPA 608 certification. This makes installation quality more consequential, not less. Two practical implications: on a changeover from R-410A the refrigerant lines should be replaced or thoroughly flushed and verified compatible (a low quote that skips this is a red flag), and you should ask whether the contractor’s technicians are trained on A2L systems. Parts for the new systems carry a modest premium over R-410A equivalents; that is already reflected in current replacement prices.
R-454B vs R-32
Both do the same job. R-32 is a single-component refrigerant with slightly higher efficiency and higher operating pressure; R-454B is a blend that operates closer to R-410A’s characteristics and is what most major U.S. brands chose. For a homeowner the difference is mostly which brand you’re buying and, later, which refrigerant your contractor stocks for service; neither is a reason to pick a system on its own. Installer competence and correct sizing still determine how the system performs. What a proper installation includes.
Where to start
If your R-410A system is healthy, do nothing except keep it serviced. If it needs a refrigerant-side repair and is past 10–12 years, get a replacement quote alongside the repair. Either way, choose a contractor whose license we’ve already checked in the registry and ask about A2L training before you sign.
