A furnace that turns on and off every few minutes is usually protecting itself: the most common causes are overheating from restricted airflow (dirty filter, closed vents, dirty blower), a dirty flame sensor that makes the control board think the burners didn’t light, a thermostat that’s badly placed or failing, or a furnace that was oversized for the house and satisfies the thermostat too fast. Check the filter and vents first, then the flame sensor if you’re comfortable, and call for anything involving the limit switch, pressure switch, gas valve or heat exchanger.
What “short cycling” looks like
Normal winter cycles run 10–20 minutes with reasonable gaps. Short cycling is cycles of one to five minutes, over and over. There are two distinct patterns worth telling apart, because they point to different causes: the furnace lights, runs several minutes, then shuts off before the house is warm (overheating or thermostat), versus the furnace lights, runs under a minute and shuts off, often trying three times then locking out (flame sensor, ignition, pressure switch).
Check first
Filter. A clogged filter is the number-one cause of overheating short cycles: not enough air moves across the heat exchanger, the temperature climbs, the high-limit switch cuts the burners, the furnace cools, and it starts again. Replace it. Filter guide.
Vents and returns. Open closed supply vents; make sure returns aren’t blocked. Same overheating logic.
Thermostat. Location matters: a thermostat in direct sunlight, near a supply vent, or on a wall next to a heat source will satisfy quickly and short-cycle the furnace. Check batteries and that the setpoint and schedule are what you think.
Exhaust and intake. For high-efficiency furnaces with PVC vent pipes outside, make sure neither is blocked by snow, ice, leaves or a nest; a blocked vent trips the pressure switch.

Oversizing
A furnace that has short-cycled since the day it was installed and produces blasts of hot air followed by long cool gaps was probably sized by rule of thumb rather than a load calculation. It’s inefficient and hard on the equipment, but it’s not a repair; it’s a note for the next replacement, and it argues for proper sizing and, in North Carolina’s climate, for considering a heat pump or dual-fuel system when the time comes.
When to call
Call if a clean filter and open vents don’t fix it within a day; if the furnace locks out (won’t restart without cycling power); if you smell gas or burning; or if a CO detector sounds (leave the house and call the gas utility first). Ask the technician what the control board’s error code was; most furnaces flash a code that names the fault.
