If your outdoor HVAC unit has been flooded, struck by debris, or was running when the power went out in a storm, do not turn it back on until it’s been checked: shut off the breaker and the disconnect, photograph the damage for insurance, look for standing water in the unit, bent fan blades, crushed coil fins or refrigerant line damage, and have a technician inspect the electrical components before restoring power — flooded capacitors, contactors, motors and control boards fail dangerously when energised, and saltwater flooding on the coast is especially destructive.
Right now
Breaker off; disconnect pulled. Photos and video of the unit, the water line, debris and any obvious damage. Don’t remove the unit or dry it yourself beyond removing loose debris. If water entered the house and reached the air handler, treat it the same way. If you smell gas at a furnace, leave and call the gas utility.
What water does
Fresh water: motors, capacitors, contactors, control boards and wiring often fail; the compressor may survive; insulation and refrigerant line insulation degrade. Saltwater: corrosion begins immediately in windings, terminals and coils; a saltwater-flooded unit is very often a replacement. Depth and duration matter; even a few inches into the base pan reaches the wiring.
What wind and debris do
Bent fan blades (out of balance, will destroy the motor), crushed fins (reduced airflow; combable if minor), punctured coils (refrigerant loss), and torn or crushed refrigerant lines. A unit blown off its pad may have kinked lines. Don’t run it.
Power outages and surges
When power returns after an outage, surges can take out boards and capacitors; if the unit won’t start or trips the breaker afterward, that’s the likely reason (breaker tripping). Surge protection at the disconnect is inexpensive insurance, especially for variable-speed systems. Lightning strikes can destroy the whole electrical side and are usually an insurance claim.
Insurance
Wind, falling trees and debris are typically covered under homeowners policies; flood damage generally requires flood insurance; power surge coverage varies. Document before repairs, get a written diagnosis, and ask the technician to itemise storm damage separately from wear.

Outdoor units in New Hanover, Brunswick, Carteret and other coastal counties should be elevated above the base flood elevation where practical, anchored to wind-load requirements (a permit item), and specified in coastal-grade cabinets and coils.
