Warranty Math: How Coverage Changes Repair vs Replace

By Chris Szetela, HVAC Registrar Updated Aug 16, 2026 Answers: Does my warranty change whether I should repair or replace?

A parts warranty usually turns a replace decision into a repair decision, but not always: a covered compressor or coil still costs $600–$2,650 in labor, refrigerant and ancillary parts, so on a system near the end of its life the “free” part can still be a poor investment, while on a system under 10 years it’s almost always worth doing. Check coverage first, then run the numbers below.

What a parts warranty pays and doesn’t

Pays: the failed component (compressor, coil, motor, board) supplied through the dealer network. Doesn’t pay: labor, refrigerant recovery and recharge, filter-driers and other consumables, shipping or expediting, and any unrelated failure found along the way. On R-410A systems the refrigerant portion alone can be several hundred dollars (recharge cost).

Worked cases

Compressor under warranty, system 7 years old. Out-of-pocket ~$1,000–$1,800. Replacement ~$8,000–$12,000. Repair.

Coil under warranty, system 9 years old. Out-of-pocket ~$700–$1,500. Repair, and check the rest of the system while it’s open.

Compressor under warranty, system 12 years old, second major repair. Out-of-pocket ~$1,200–$2,000 for a part that buys maybe three years on an aging R-410A system with a rising service cost. Get a replacement quote; a close call that often goes to replace, especially with rebates.

Coil out of warranty, system 11 years old. $1,200–$2,800. Replace is usually the answer.

Blower motor under warranty, any age. Repair.

The rule of thumb

If the warranty repair’s out-of-pocket is under about 15% of replacement cost and the system is under 12 years, repair. If it’s over 25% and the system is 12+, replace. In between, weigh remaining life, comfort, efficiency and rebates (repair or replace).

Keep the warranty alive

Registration, licensed installation and, where required, documented maintenance are what keep coverage in force (warranties explained). Every contractor on the North Carolina registry shows the license status we found; only licensed work keeps most warranties intact.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my part is under warranty?

The contractor checks the serial number with the manufacturer. Registered systems typically carry 10-year parts coverage; unregistered ones often 5. Ask before authorising anything.

Why is a 'free' compressor still $1,500?

The part is free; the labor to remove and install it, refrigerant recovery and recharge, a new drier and possibly a new coil are not.

Can I get labor covered?

Only under a labor warranty from the contractor or an extended plan. Manufacturer parts warranties don't include labor.
