Ductless Mini-Split Cost (2026)

By Chris Szetela, HVAC Registrar Updated Aug 16, 2026 Answers: What does a mini-split cost installed, and is it the right choice for my space?

A ductless mini-split costs $3,500 to $8,000 installed for a single-zone system in 2026 and $8,000 to $19,000 for a multi-zone system with three or four indoor heads, depending on capacity, efficiency tier, head style (wall, ceiling cassette, floor, concealed) and how far the refrigerant lines run; the strongest use cases are additions, bonus rooms, garages, sunrooms and homes without ductwork, where the alternative would be running new ducts. As heat pumps, mini-splits qualify for many of the same rebates as ducted systems, which in North Carolina can substantially cut the price for eligible households.

Typical installed cost

SystemTypical cost (2026)
Single-zone, 9,000–12,000 BTU (one room / garage)$3,500 – $6,000
Single-zone, 18,000–24,000 BTU (large room / open plan)$4,500 – $8,000
Two-zone$6,500 – $11,000
Three- to four-zone$8,000 – $19,000
Concealed-duct or ceiling-cassette headsadd $500 – $1,500 per head

Add for long line runs, line-hide covers, electrical circuits or a panel upgrade, and difficult mounting.

What drives the price

Number and type of heads; capacity; efficiency tier (many mini-splits are inherently high-SEER2 inverter units); brand tier; line-set length and routing; electrical work; and, for multi-zone, whether one large outdoor unit or several singles is the better design (singles are often more efficient and redundant; one multi-zone unit is tidier).

Mini-split vs central air

For a whole house with existing ducts, a ducted heat pump is usually cheaper and simpler than a multi-head mini-split system. For spaces without ducts, or where extending ducts is impractical, a mini-split is often the best answer and avoids the cost of ductwork. Mini-split vs central air compares them; heat pump cost has ducted ranges.

Rebates

Mini-splits are heat pumps: ENERGY STAR-certified units installed by a registered contractor can qualify for Energy Saver NC (up to $8,000 for income-eligible households) and utility rebates. Confirm the specific model qualifies before you buy (Energy Saver NC).

Getting quotes

Ask for the load for each zone (rooms get oversized mini-splits constantly), head placement, line routing and covers, condensate drainage, and who pulls the permit. Every contractor on the North Carolina registry shows the license status we found.

Frequently asked questions

Can a mini-split heat and cool a whole house?

Multi-zone systems can, and in some homes they're a good fit; but past three or four zones a ducted heat pump is usually cheaper and simpler. Mini-splits shine for additions, garages, bonus rooms and homes without ducts.

Are DIY mini-split kits a good idea?

Pre-charged kits exist; refrigerant handling still legally requires EPA 608 certification, warranties usually require professional installation, and permits apply. Most rebates require a registered contractor.

How long do mini-splits last?

15–20 years with filter cleaning and occasional coil service; the small filters need cleaning monthly in use.
